Most of the 2023 roofing trends for Colorado Springs still make sense, but not all of them aged the same way. Impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles and stone-coated steel have become mainstream choices because of hail, and a 2026 state law now funds grants for resilient roofs. Architectural shingles are simply the default. Cool roofs got harder to shop for after the ENERGY STAR roof label ended in 2022, “sustainable” wood shakes ran into the city’s Class A rule, and bold colors are holding steady rather than taking over.

What lasted, in more detail
Impact resistance. Class 4 shingles flex instead of cracking, and they may earn an insurance discount; ask your insurer. Colorado’s SB26-155 (signed June 4, 2026) created the Strengthen Colorado Homes Enterprise, funded by a fee on homeowner’s insurers starting in 2027, with at least 85 percent of the revenue going to grants for resilient roof systems. Stone-coated steel and metal. Owners who want a shake or tile look without the weight or the fire risk have moved here. For the environmental side, see is a metal roof eco-friendly.
Architectural shingles. Owens Corning rates Oakridge for 110 mph (130 mph with six nails and its starter and hip and ridge) against 60 mph for Supreme 3-tab. That gap is why 3-tab is rarely the right roof on a home now.
What changed
Cool roofs. The trend was real but the shopping changed. The EPA ended ENERGY STAR for roof products effective June 1, 2022, and Owens Corning lists its Duration COOL line as available only in California. Wood shakes. The 2023 post suggested sustainable wood shakes. For homes in the City of Colorado Springs, PPRBD now requires Class A coverings excluding solid wood, and the state’s Wildfire Resiliency Code adds Class A rules in mapped wildland-urban interface areas. The look survives in synthetic cedar.
Smart sensors and living roofs. Interesting, but on homes we rarely see them; a twice-yearly inspection still catches more.
Colors and styles
