A storm counts when NOAA lists a report in Travis County. Each hail size is the storm's largest report in the seven Austin-area counties, which may have fallen in a neighboring county, and insured losses cover every area the storm hit.

What we look for on an Austin roof
Central Texas roofs fail in two ways: sudden damage from hail and high wind, and slow damage from long, hot summers. We check for both.
- Storm damage. Hail bruises and cracks, missing or creased shingles after wind, and dented vents, gutters, and downspouts.
- Heat and sun wear. Blistering, cracking, curling, and heavy granule loss, usually worst on the slopes that face the afternoon sun.
- Attic heat and ventilation. A hot, poorly vented attic shortens shingle life and drives up cooling bills.
- Flashing, valleys, and gutters. Where heavy downpours find their way in, and where clogged or undersized gutters back water up.
Our guide to signs of summer roof damage in Austin shows what heat wear looks like.
Austin permits and Texas law, in short
Inside City of Austin limits, swapping asphalt shingles for asphalt shingles is generally exempt from a building permit. The exemptions stop when the home is in the Wildland-Urban Interface area and half or more of the roof is replaced, or when more than 128 square feet of decking is replaced. Suburbs set their own rules. Under Texas law, no contractor may offer to waive, rebate, or absorb your insurance deductible.
