We install Owens Corning shingles on most of our roofs, as an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor, and which line fits your roof usually comes down to three choices: Oakridge for a solid architectural roof on a budget, Duration for stronger wind performance, and Duration FLEX or Duration STORM when you want a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating for hail. Supreme 3-tab is still available for sheds and rentals. You can verify our certification on Owens Corning’s contractor profile.
The lines side by side

| Line | Type | Impact rating | Wind | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supreme | 3-tab | Not impact-rated | 60 mph limited warranty; 25-year limited warranty | Sheds, outbuildings, rentals |
| Oakridge | Architectural | Not impact-rated | 110 mph, or 130 mph with six nails and Owens Corning starter at eaves and rakes; limited lifetime warranty | Value architectural roof |
| TruDefinition Duration | Architectural with SureNail | Class 3 in Owens Corning’s comparison | Up to 160 mph wind warranty on the Duration series from August 1, 2026, with requirements | Wind-exposed homes |
| TruDefinition Duration FLEX | Architectural, SBS modified | UL 2218 and FM 4473 Class 4 | SureNail; 42 percent better nail pull-resistance than standard shingles, per Owens Corning | Hail country, cold-weather installs |
| TruDefinition Duration STORM | Architectural, reinforced backing | UL 2218 Class 4 | Up to 160 mph when component and starter requirements are met | Hail and high wind |

What the names mean
- SureNail Technology is the nailing zone on Duration series shingles; Owens Corning credits it with outstanding gripping power.
- SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) is a rubber-like polymer blended into Duration FLEX’s asphalt. Owens Corning says it makes the shingle pliable, which helps it take impacts and resist cracking during cold installs.
- WeatherGuard backing is how Duration STORM reaches Class 4.
Owens Corning is also clear about limits: a class rating does not guarantee a shingle will withstand a given hailstorm, and its shingles are not covered under a warranty for hail damage. Read is a Class 4 shingle worth it? before you pay for the upgrade.
The rest of the system
A shingle is one layer. We pair Owens Corning shingles with:
- WeatherLock self-sealing ice and water barrier at eaves, valleys and penetrations; see self-adhering underlayment.
- Starter shingles at the eaves and rakes, which several wind warranties require.
- Hip and ridge shingles matched to the field shingle, including the impact-rated ridge a Class 4 system needs.
- Ventilation sized for the attic, because heat and moisture shorten any shingle’s life.
How each component goes on is laid out in the Integrity Roofing System.
Choosing a color and a tier
Pick the performance tier first, then the color: every line comes in a range of colors, and the Austin heat changes the color conversation; see most popular roof colors in Austin.
