Key numbers
103 verified hail storms with stones of 1.5 inches or larger reached El Paso County, which includes Colorado Springs, from 2000 to 2025 in the storm records we keep; the largest measured 4.5 inches (softball size) on July 13, 2011 (NOAA NCEI).

A storm counts when the library lists El Paso County among the areas it hit. Each hail size is the storm's largest report, which may have fallen in a neighboring county, and insured losses cover every area the storm hit.
For most Colorado Springs homes, the best asphalt shingle is an architectural (laminated) shingle, and if hail is your main worry, an impact-resistant architectural shingle with a UL 2218 Class 4 rating. Luxury shingles add the look of slate or shake. Three-tab shingles are the budget option we no longer install. Whichever you choose, PPRBD requires a full tear-off to the deck, drip edge at the eaves and rakes, and a permit.
The three shingle tiers we offer
We present shingle options as Good, Better, and Best so you can compare price and protection side by side:
- Good: architectural shingles. Two or more laminated layers, a dimensional look, and better wind resistance than flat shingles. This is the standard replacement roof in Colorado Springs.
- Better: impact-resistant architectural shingles. Built to pass the UL 2218 steel-ball test at Class 4, the highest level. Some insurers offer a premium discount for them; ask your carrier. Our Class 4 shingle comparison covers the products.
- Best: luxury shingles. Thicker, heavier designer shingles that imitate slate or wood shake, such as the Presidential shingle.
Still have three-tab shingles? That page explains why we recommend replacing rather than patching them.
What PPRBD requires on a shingle reroof
The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department publishes reroof guidelines that apply across Colorado Springs and El Paso County. For asphalt shingles:
- Tear off every layer. New asphalt shingles cannot be installed over existing roofing on a home.
- Pitch of 2:12 or steeper. Shingles are not permitted on flatter sections.
- Drip edge at both the eaves and the rakes.
- Ice barrier above 7,000 feet, extending at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line.
- No mid-roof inspection for typical asphalt roofs, but the contractor who pulled the permit must schedule the final.
We pull the permit, and the materials are not delivered until it is issued, because stocking shingles on the driveway before the permit is a code violation.
Why most of our shingle roofs are Owens Corning
Integrity is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor, and most of the shingle roofs we install are complete Owens Corning systems: shingles plus matching starter, hip and ridge, underlayment, and ventilation. At the inspection we show you which manufacturer warranty comes with the system you choose, and we register it when the job is done.
What does a shingle roof cost?
Price depends on roof size, pitch, the shingle tier, and whether decking needs replacing. Our asphalt shingle roof cost guide breaks down the numbers, and financing is available. If hail damaged your roof, start with storm damage repair: the claim stays yours, and our photos make sure nothing gets missed in the scope.
