Owens Corning Duration and Duration FLEX are both TruDefinition Duration series architectural shingles with SureNail technology, and they look nearly identical on a roof. The difference is impact resistance: Duration FLEX is made with SBS polymer modified asphalt and carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, while standard Duration does not reach Class 4. In Colorado Springs, where hail is the main threat to a roof, Duration FLEX is usually the better buy when your insurer offers a Class 4 discount. If it does not, standard Duration is a solid shingle for less money.
Side by side
| TruDefinition Duration | TruDefinition Duration FLEX | |
|---|---|---|
| Shingle type | Laminated architectural, SureNail strip | Laminated architectural, SureNail strip |
| Asphalt | Standard asphalt | SBS polymer modified (rubberized) asphalt |
| Impact rating | Class 3 in Owens Corning’s own comparison | UL 2218 and FM 4473 Class 4 |
| Nail pull | Standard | 42 percent better nail pull-resistance against wind than standard shingles, per Owens Corning |
| Tear strength | Standard | More than 10 percent stronger tear strength than traditional shingles, per Owens Corning |
| Cold installs | Stiffer when cold, like most asphalt shingles | Pliable, resists cracking in cold-weather installs |
| Insurance discount | Usually none for impact | Often eligible, set by each insurer |
| Price | Lower | Higher; we quote both on your roof |
Performance figures are Owens Corning’s own statements. A class rating describes a lab test; it does not guarantee a shingle survives a given storm, and Owens Corning’s shingles carry no warranty against hail damage.
What SBS actually changes
SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) is a rubber-like polymer blended into the asphalt. Owens Corning describes the result as pliable: when a hailstone hits, the mat flexes instead of fracturing, which is what a Class 4 test looks for. Owens Corning also says the flexibility helps the shingle lay flat sooner and reduces granule loss. Two Colorado effects matter more than the lab numbers:
- Cold installs. Front Range roofs get replaced in every season. A stiff shingle at low temperatures is easier to crack when it is bent over a ridge or nailed; a rubberized one tolerates it better. Our guide to cold-weather roof installs covers what changes in winter.
- Aging at altitude. Every asphalt shingle stiffens as it ages under high-altitude UV, so a 15-year-old Class 4 roof will not resist hail like a new one. The rating helps most in the first part of the roof’s life, which is also when a hail claim would hurt the most.
The insurance math in Colorado
Whether FLEX pays for itself comes down to three numbers: the price difference on your roof, your insurer’s yearly Class 4 discount in writing, and your wind and hail deductible. Many Colorado policies now use a percentage deductible, so one avoided claim can equal years of discounts. Colorado’s new Strengthen Colorado Homes program (SB26-155) will also require insurers to report the discounts they give for resilient roofs once rules are in place, no sooner than January 1, 2027. Our page on whether a Class 4 shingle is worth it runs the full calculation.
Two policy terms can change the answer. A roof-only actual cash value endorsement pays less as the roof ages no matter what shingle is on it; see ACV vs RCV roof coverage. And a cosmetic damage exclusion can deny dents that do not leak, which matters less on asphalt than on metal.
When standard Duration is the right call
- Your insurer offers no impact discount and you do not expect to stay long.
- The roof is a detached garage or outbuilding where a hail claim is unlikely to be filed.
- Budget is fixed and the alternative would be a lower line such as Oakridge.
For anything else in the Pikes Peak region, we start the conversation with FLEX. If you want a different look, stone-coated steel is the other Class 4 option we install. For the full Owens Corning lineup, including Oakridge and Duration STORM, see Owens Corning shingles compared.
HOA and permit notes
Most HOAs approve either line without question because they look alike; name the exact line and color on the submittal (the Owens Corning color selector shows the options). Our guide to HOA roof approval in Colorado has a checklist. Neither choice changes the PPRBD permit: an asphalt reroof gets one final inspection, with an ice barrier required only above 7,000 feet.
