Key numbers
103 verified hail storms with stones of 1.5 inches or larger reached El Paso County, which includes Monument, from 2000 to 2025 in the storm records we keep; the largest measured 4.5 inches (softball size) on July 13, 2011 (NOAA NCEI).

A storm counts when the library lists El Paso County among the areas it hit. Each hail size is the storm's largest report, which may have fallen in a neighboring county, and insured losses cover every area the storm hit.
A metal roof in Monument is permitted and inspected by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD), like any other roof in town or in the unincorporated Monument area. Three details shape a metal job here: direct-to-deck metal shingles do not need a mid-roof inspection under PPRBD’s guidelines; homes above 7,000 feet still need an ice barrier at the eaves under the metal, and Monument straddles that line; and in covenant-controlled areas such as Woodmoor, a change to metal needs HOA architectural approval first. Metal suits Monument’s snow and hail, as long as the bid also plans for where sliding snow will land.
Which metal fits a Monument home?
| Type | Where it fits | Learn more |
|---|---|---|
| Standing seam | Clean modern or mountain look; concealed fasteners | Standing seam metal |
| Stone-coated steel | The look of shake or tile with a textured finish | Metal roofing overview |
| Steel panels and shingles | A wide range of profiles and colors | Steel roofing |
| Aluminum | Light weight, corrosion resistant | Aluminum roofing |

Snow: the part most metal bids skip
Metal sheds snow, which is one reason it suits the Palmer Divide, but that snow has to go somewhere. Above doors, decks, walkways, gas meters and lower roofs, snow guards keep a slab from coming down all at once. PPRBD’s design ground snow load is 43 pounds per square foot below 7,000 feet and 57 above it; that number is for designing structures, but it is a fair reminder of how much snow sits on roofs up here.
Elevation and the ice barrier
PPRBD requires an ice barrier on properties above 7,000 feet, from the eave edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall. That rule follows the property, not the material, so it applies under metal too. The National Weather Service forecast point just west-southwest of Woodmoor reads 6,998 feet; your permit receipt shows the elevation PPRBD uses for your lot.
Wildfire rules for unincorporated addresses
Some “Monument” addresses are unincorporated El Paso County, where county wildfire standards can apply to a new roof on a mapped lot. Those standards require a Class A roof covering or assembly, and where a metal profile leaves a gap above the deck, a way to keep embers out. Ask for the Class A listing of the exact system before you choose it. Our Black Forest page has the full checklist, and the Monument roofing page explains how to tell if you are inside town limits. Our Class A roof guide explains covering versus assembly ratings, and the ember-resistant vents guide covers the vent rule that comes with them.
