Stone-coated steel roofing is a steel panel coated with crushed stone granules and pressed into the shape of shake, tile or a shingle. In Colorado Springs it is the option for homeowners who want a Class 4 impact rating and a Class A fire rating without the look of a metal panel roof. Its weak points are cost (more than a Class 4 asphalt shingle), dents from very large hail that insurers may call cosmetic, and fewer crews who install it well. If your priority is hail performance for the money, a Class 4 shingle usually wins; if you want a long-lived roof that looks like shake or tile, stone-coated steel is hard to beat.
How it holds up in Colorado Springs weather
Figures below are DECRA’s, as a representative manufacturer; other brands publish similar ratings.
| Threat | Rating or behavior |
|---|---|
| Hail | UL 2218 Class 4. DECRA’s limited warranty covers hail damage up to 2.5 inches in diameter. |
| Fire | Class A, which meets PPRBD’s minimum roof covering for homes in the City of Colorado Springs. |
| Wind | Warranty for winds up to 120 mph; tested for uplift under UL 580 and UL 1897. |
| Snow | The textured surface tends to hold snow more like shingles than smooth standing seam does, so large sudden slides are less common. |
| Weight | About 150 pounds per roofing square for most profiles, far lighter than tile. |
PPRBD treats direct-to-deck metal shingles like asphalt for inspections: no mid-roof inspection, one final once the work is complete, under a standard reroof permit.
Stone-coated steel problems to know before you buy
Searches for “stone coated steel roofing problems” are common, and the honest answers are these:
- Cosmetic hail dents. A Class 4 rating means the panel resists cracking and penetration, not that it never dents. Some policies carry a cosmetic damage exclusion that pays nothing for dents that do not leak. Read yours before you choose; see ACV vs RCV roof coverage.
- Granule wear and scratches. The stone chips protect the coating and the steel. A deep scratch, a dragged ladder or a careless trade can expose bare steel that may rust over time. A few loose granules in the gutters after install are normal; bare spots are not.
- Foot traffic. The profiles are strong where supported and can crush where not. Every trade that walks the roof needs to know where to step.
- Fewer qualified installers. Panels interlock and need specific flashing at walls, valleys and penetrations. Flashing done the way a shingle roof is flashed is a common cause of leaks on these systems, so ask how many stone-coated roofs the crew has installed.
- Repairs need matching panels. Colors and profiles change over the years. Keep spare panels from the install if you can.
- Cost. It costs more than a Class 4 asphalt roof. We price it after an inspection because roof shape, pitch and tear-off change the number more than with shingles.
Stone-coated steel vs Class 4 shingles vs standing seam
| Stone-coated steel | Class 4 asphalt shingle | Standing seam steel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Shake, tile or shingle | Architectural shingle | Smooth vertical panels |
| Hail rating | UL 2218 Class 4 | UL 2218 Class 4 | Varies by panel and gauge |
| Cosmetic dent risk | Moderate, partly hidden by texture | Low, damage is usually functional | Highest, dents show |
| Fire rating | Class A | Class A | Class A |
| Typical cost | Higher | Lowest of the three | Higher |
| HOA fit | Good where shake or tile is required | Good almost everywhere | Mixed |

HOAs and wood-look roofs
Stone-coated shake profiles are often the answer when an older covenant calls for a wood look. Colorado law bars an HOA from requiring cedar shakes or other flammable roofing, and PPRBD requires a Class A covering inside city limits, so a Class A shake-look product is usually the path to approval. Our guide to HOA roof approval in Colorado has a submittal checklist.
