A storm counts when the library lists El Paso County among the areas it hit. Each hail size is the storm's largest report, which may have fallen in a neighboring county, and insured losses cover every area the storm hit.

Your Colorado Springs roof needs replacing, not repairing, when the problems are spread across the roof rather than in one spot: leaks in more than one place, shingles missing or lifting on several slopes, widespread hail bruising, soft decking, or a roof near the end of its life. What a permitted replacement includes
In Colorado Springs and El Paso County, the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) treats any roof repair or replacement over 100 square feet as permitted work for a licensed contractor, and inside city limits the new roof must be a Class A roof covering. On a typical asphalt reroof that means:
- Permit first. Materials cannot be stocked on the driveway or roof before the permit is issued; PPRBD can triple the permit fee and stop work if they are.
- Full tear-off. New asphalt shingles cannot go over existing layers on a home.
- Decking check. Plank decking with gaps over a quarter inch must be re-decked or overlaid.
- Ice barrier at the eaves if the property is above 7,000 feet.
- Final inspection, scheduled by the contractor who pulled the permit.
How long does it take?
Most asphalt replacements take one to two days on the roof once materials are delivered. Metal, tile, and complex roofs take longer. Add time for the permit, and after a major hailstorm, for PPRBD’s inspection backlog. Our new roof installation page walks through install day.
