A roof repair in Elbert is permitted by Elbert County once it is bigger than 100 square feet. Elbert is an unincorporated community in Elbert County, so the County Building Department handles every permit, from a patch to a full replacement: permits are required for all roof repairs over one square (100 square feet) and for replacements. The County licenses the contractors who do the work and offers mid-roof inspections by photo or in person. A small repair below the threshold needs no permit, but it should still be done right, because rural roofs here take wind and hail with little shelter.
Elbert County’s repair rules
- Permit threshold. Repairs over 100 sq ft and all replacements need a permit.
- Licensed contractors. The County licenses contractors and will verify a license or provide a list.
- Mid-roof inspection in person or by photo, with the owner’s written consent.
- Design criteria. The County publishes its own snow load and wind table and does not allow reductions.
- Applications go through the County’s CommunityCore portal. Questions: 720-595-3619 or BuildingDepartment@ElbertCounty-co.gov.

Storms move across the county line here. On June 7, 2012 the National Weather Service surveyed a tornado that crossed from Elbert County into El Paso County north of Calhan, and reported much wind and hail damage in eastern El Paso County. See our Calhan roofing page for the plains just south of here.
