Corrugated metal roofing is the right choice for barns, shops, garages, sheds, and covered arenas, and for homes where a rustic or farmhouse look is the goal. It is the most affordable metal roof and very durable, but the screws go through the face of the panel, so it needs periodic fastener maintenance that a standing seam roof does not. For most houses we recommend standing seam; for outbuildings, corrugated is hard to beat.
U-panel vs R-panel
- U-panel (classic corrugated) has the rounded wave most people picture. It suits homes, sheds, and accent walls.
- R-panel has taller trapezoid ribs and is stiffer, so it spans wider supports on shops, barns, and agricultural buildings.
Both are usually steel with a galvanized or Galvalume coating, either bare or painted.
Where we install it
On acreage properties in our service area, such as Black Forest, Falcon, and Peyton, corrugated panels are a natural fit for barns, shops, and loafing sheds, and in town for detached garages. On a house, the look works best on modern farmhouse, mountain, and ranch designs. Agricultural buildings and accessory structures have different code paths from homes; inside city limits, PPRBD requires a Class B minimum roof covering on accessory structures rather than the Class A required on homes.
Maintenance that keeps it leak-free
- Check fasteners and replace worn washers every few years.
- Keep debris out of panel laps and valleys.
- Look it over after hail: dents in the flat part of the panel are usually cosmetic, but dents at laps and fasteners can leak.
- Keep dissimilar metals, such as copper, from touching galvanized panels.
Snow and wind
Corrugated panels shed snow, so plan for where it lands, especially over barn and shop doors. PPRBD’s 130 mph design wind speed means fastener spacing and purlin attachment matter; we follow the panel manufacturer’s fastening schedule, tighter at the edges and ridge.
