Fountain’s roofs need to be ready for big hail, because Fountain has had some of the largest in the region. On June 13, 2018, a rare overnight supercell intensified over Fountain, and the National Weather Service reports 3.0-inch hail there. Less than two months later, on August 6, 2018, a spotter reported 2.5-inch hail 3 miles north of Fountain. If your roof has been through storms like these, the questions are whether it has functional damage now and whether the next roof should be tougher. Reroofs in the City of Fountain are permitted by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD), with the same rules as Colorado Springs.

The June storm started over Cheyenne Mountain, dropped 2.5-inch hail on Fort Carson, and then strengthened over Fountain. The NWS Pueblo office estimated its damage at around $169 million.
Signs your Fountain roof needs work
- Granules collecting at downspouts or in gutters.
- Dents in gutters, vents, AC fins and garage doors on the storm side.
- Shingle pieces in the yard after wind.
- Ceiling stains after rain, especially near vents and the chimney.
- Age. An older roof that has taken several storms often costs less to replace than to keep patching.
Our hail damage repair page explains what we look for on the roof.
The PPRBD reroof in Fountain
- A permit for any repair or replacement over 100 square feet, before materials are stocked on site.
- All existing asphalt layers removed before new shingles.
- Drip edge at eaves and rakes; no asphalt shingles below a 2:12 pitch.
- Permits run 180 days with one free extension. After big storms, inspections are not same day or next day.
The contractor who pulls your permit is the only one who can schedule the inspection. Check that your roofer is licensed with PPRBD.
Choosing a tougher roof
A UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant shingle is the most common upgrade in hail country. See our Class 4 shingle comparison. Steel metal roofing is another option. We present Good, Better and Best choices with upfront pricing, and financing is available.
