Stone-coated steel is steel roofing pressed into a traditional profile and finished with bonded stone granules, and this west Colorado Springs project used it to replace an asphalt shingle roof: about 35 squares of charcoal stone-coated steel at a 6/12 pitch, insurance-funded, with the contract signed in August 2023 and the finished roof photographed in April 2024.

The problem

Storm damage left the home’s asphalt shingle roof in need of replacement, and the replacement was funded through the homeowner’s insurance. Rather than going back with shingles, the owner chose stone-coated steel for the new roof. On a hillside lot, where neighbors uphill look down onto the roof, the look of the finished roof mattered as much as its toughness.

Scope

  • Roof: tear-off of the asphalt shingle roof and new stone-coated steel, about 35 squares.
  • Color: charcoal (first photo).
  • Pitch: 6/12, a standard slope.
  • Details: flashed valleys between roof planes (second photo) and the granular stone finish up close (third photo).

The process

  1. Material decision. Stone-coated steel has its own installation system: battens or direct-to-deck, depending on the product, with matched hip, ridge and valley pieces. We size the order to the system.
  2. Permit. Pulled through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.
  3. Tear-off and deck repair. Shingles off, deck checked, damaged sheathing replaced.
  4. Underlayment and valleys. Valleys are where most water concentrates, so they are lined and flashed before the panels go on (second photo).
  5. Panels, hips and ridge. Installed course by course with the manufacturer’s fasteners.
  6. Final inspection and cleanup.

Timeline

Contract in August 2023; finished-roof photos in April 2024. Specialty material lead times and winter weather often stretch the gap between signing and install; the owner will confirm the install month before this page is promoted.

What this project shows about west-side roofs

  • Hillsides make the roof part of the view. From above, the valley and ridge lines are visible to neighbors, so straight lines and matched trim matter.
  • Specialty materials need lead time. Stone-coated steel is not a same-week order, so plan for it if you are choosing it after a storm.
  • The granule coat earns its keep. It dulls the metal’s glare, quiets rain noise compared with bare steel, and gives the profile its shadow lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is stone-coated steel?

Steel roof panels coated with a layer of stone granules bonded to the metal. The panels are pressed into shake, tile or shingle profiles, so the roof reads like a traditional roof from the street while being steel underneath.

Is a stone-coated steel roof loud in rain or hail?

Less than most people expect. The stone granules and the solid deck and underlayment beneath the panels damp the sound, so it is closer to a shingle roof than to a bare metal barn roof.

How steep must a roof be for stone-coated steel?

Products installed as metal roof shingles fall under IRC Section R905.4, which sets a 3:12 minimum slope. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, which can be stricter. This roof was 6/12.
