Storm Archive: Major Hail and Wind Storms in Colorado Springs, Denver and Austin

The storms that hit our three markets hardest since 2010, each with its official NOAA record, the areas hit and what that storm's hail does to a roof.

Veteran-owned Family-run since 1990 650+ Google reviews

This storm archive is a record of the major hail and wind storms that hit Colorado Springs, the Denver metro and the Austin area between 2010 and 2025, built from official NOAA data rather than news headlines. Each page gives the storm's date, the counties and towns with reports, the largest hail and strongest gusts on record, what hail of that size typically does to a roof, and the claim timing rules for that state. There are 5 Colorado Springs storms, 7 Denver storms and 5 Austin storms so far, with stones up to 4.5 inches. Use the buttons to filter by market.

Every Colorado storm on record, 1984 to 2026

This table lists all 365 verified Colorado events in our storm research library: hail, wind, tornadoes, wildfires and snow, with the counties hit, the largest hail, the strongest gust and the insured loss where a source gives one. Every row links to its source, mostly the NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database and the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA). Use the filters to narrow it by county, type, hail size or decade, and the column headings to sort.

Insured losses are nominal dollars of the loss year, for every area the event hit, as the source states them. Blank cells mean the source gives no figure. Dates link to an event page where one exists.

Hail history by county

Each page shows the largest hail on record, hail events by decade, the costliest storms and what the record means for roofs. The seven Denver metro counties share most of their storms, so they share one page.

Significant Colorado storms before 2010

Storms with an insured loss of $100 million or more, or hail of 2.5 inches or more with injuries or a large damage estimate on record, each have a page. Storms already covered above link to those pages from the table instead.

How storms make the archive

A storm is listed only when the official record is strong enough to describe it: multiple NOAA reports in the counties around one of our offices, hail of about 1.75 inches (golf ball) or larger, or thunderstorm gusts near 70 mph or more. For Colorado Springs that means El Paso and Teller counties; for Denver, Denver, Adams, Arapahoe, Jefferson, Douglas, Boulder and Broomfield counties; for Austin, Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. Storms with only one or two scattered reports are left out, even when they did real damage, because a thin record cannot tell a homeowner much.

Two sources sit behind every page. The Storm Prediction Center posts preliminary reports from spotters, the public and weather stations, usually the same day. The NCEI Storm Events Database holds the National Weather Service's final entries, which can correct sizes, times and places months later, and records wind in knots, which we convert to miles per hour.

How to check whether a storm hit your address

  1. Find the date. Insurers ask for a date of loss, so start with the storm you remember and confirm it in this archive or the SPC daily reports.
  2. Check distance, not just the town. Compare the report locations on the storm's page with your street. Hail swaths can be a mile or two wide.
  3. Look from the ground. Dented gutters, downspouts, vents, mailboxes or patio furniture, and granules piled at the downspouts, point to hail big enough to mark a roof.
  4. Get the roof itself inspected. Only close-up, dated photos show whether the shingles, tile or metal took hits.

Hail sizes used in the archive

SizeNWS nameWhat it usually means for a roof
1 in.QuarterThe NWS severe threshold. Can bruise older or brittle shingles and dent soft metal.
1.75 in.Golf ballHits are common on asphalt shingles in the swath; gutters and vents dent.
2 to 2.5 in.Hen egg to tennis ballFractured shingles, cracked tile, broken skylights and windows reported.
2.75 in. and upBaseball and largerPunctures and split decking possible; most roofs in the core of the swath need replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the storm archive data come from?

Every event comes from two official NOAA sources: the Storm Prediction Center's daily storm reports, which are preliminary and posted within hours, and the NCEI Storm Events Database, which the National Weather Service finalizes months later. When the two differ, each page says so and gives both.

Why is a storm I remember not in the archive?

The archive only lists storms with a clear official record in the counties we serve: several reports, hail of about golf ball size or larger, or damaging wind gusts. Many damaging storms hit only a few neighborhoods and leave one or two reports, which is too thin to describe well. Storms we already covered in full, like May 8, 2017 in Denver, link to their own articles.

Does a storm on this list mean my roof was damaged?

No. Hail falls in narrow swaths, and the reports mark points where someone measured or saw it. A house a mile from a 2-inch report may have had pea-size hail or none. Only an inspection of your own roof answers the question.

Can I use these records for an insurance claim?

You can point your insurer to them as background on the storm date, and many adjusters check the same NOAA sources. They do not prove damage at your address. Dated photos of your roof do that, and the claim itself is between you and your insurer.
