Hail damage roof repair in Austin starts with one question: did the storm actually break anything? A Central Texas hailstone can bruise a shingle without leaving a mark you can see from the yard, and the leak may not show until the next summer. Integrity Roofing and Painting inspects for free, photographs every hit with a date, and writes a scope that says repair, replace, or leave it alone. Our Austin office is at 13341 W US Hwy 290 and serves Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. For wind damage and the first 48 hours after any storm, see our Austin storm damage repair guide.

When Austin hail falls
Hail here is a spring problem first. The National Weather Service office in New Braunfels, which covers Austin, notes a striking pattern: the three costliest hailstorms on its Austin list all struck on March 25.
| Date | What happened | Damage estimate (NWS) |
|---|---|---|
| March 25, 2009 | A long-track supercell from near Llano through Marble Falls and along the Travis and Williamson county line; 2 to 3.5 inch hail near Anderson Mill, Jollyville and Pflugerville | $160 million to homes and cars |
| March 25, 1993 | Second on the NWS list | $125 million |
| March 25, 2005 | Third on the NWS list | $100 million |
That does not make late March the only risk. NOAA logged tennis-ball hail north of Austin on April 9, 2024, and any severe thunderstorm can carry hail. If you are planning a replacement anyway, finishing it before spring storms start is worth considering.
The storms that cost Austin the most
Hail falls in narrow swaths. The 2009 storm hammered the north side while South Austin saw little. A more recent example, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center log for April 9, 2024, shows the same pattern:
- 2.5-inch hail (tennis ball) 5 miles north of Austin
- 1.5-inch hail south of Jollyville and southwest of Elgin
- 1.75-inch hail near Taylor and in Bastrop County near Elgin
- 2-inch hail west of Bastrop
- 1-inch hail near Leander, Manor and Dripping Springs
So a neighbor across town is no guide. If you live in Round Rock, Pflugerville, Leander or Cedar Park, the north-side storm tracks above run straight through you. For the full record of each storm, including where the largest stones fell and when, see our storm archive: the September 24, 2023 Round Rock and Austin storm, the May 9, 2024 Hays County storm, the May 16, 2025 Leander storm, the April 15, 2021 north-side supercell and the June 9, 2019 windstorm.
What hail does to each Austin roof
Austin roofs age differently from Colorado roofs. Long summers bake asphalt shingles, and a brittle, heat-aged shingle cracks under hail that a newer one would shrug off.
- Asphalt shingles. Dark circles where granules were knocked off, soft spots that feel like a bruised apple, and cracked tabs. Older shingles also lose their seal and lift.
- Standing seam and exposed-fastener metal. Dents in panels, ridge caps and trim. Whether dents are covered is a policy question; ask your agent whether your policy has a cosmetic damage exclusion.
- Clay and concrete tile. Cracked or broken pieces, often hidden from the ground. Broken tile exposes the underlayment to the sun. See our Austin tile roofing page.
- Everything else on the roof. Vent caps, skylight domes, solar panels, satellite dishes, gutters and window screens. Dented soft metal is the quickest way to estimate stone size.
The Weather Service treats 1-inch hail (quarter size) as severe. Golf ball size is 1.75 inches, tennis ball 2.5 inches and baseball 2.75 inches. The bigger the stone, the more likely the damage reaches past the surface.
How to prove the storm date
Your claim needs a date of loss, and a vague “sometime in spring” invites questions. Two free NOAA tools help:
- SPC daily storm reports. The Storm Prediction Center posts a preliminary list of hail reports for every day, with size and location. NOAA calls it strictly preliminary, so check it soon after the storm.
- NCEI Storm Events Database. The final, cleaned-up record arrives a few months later. Search by county (Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop) and date.
Add your own evidence: dated photos of dents on gutters, downspouts, mailboxes and cars, and hail on the ground if it was safe to photograph. Our inspection photos carry the date too.
Repair or replace after Austin hail
A few hits on one slope of a newer roof usually mean a repair. Hits across most slopes, cracked tabs, or shingles too brittle to lift for a repair usually mean a replacement. Matching is a common sticking point, because a repair with new shingles may not match a faded roof; read what Texas law says about roof matching before you assume the whole roof is covered. Inside City of Austin limits, check when an Austin reroof needs a permit, especially in a wildfire zone.
If you are replacing anyway, it is the cheapest moment to move to a Class 4 shingle. Our guide to the Texas impact-resistant roof insurance discount covers the paperwork your insurer may ask for.
Your claim, our documentation
If you file, the claim is yours. Texas does not let a roofer act as your adjuster, and we do not. We meet the adjuster on the roof if you want us there, show every hit we photographed, and make sure nothing gets missed in the scope. For Texas claim deadlines and the deductible law, see Austin roof insurance claim help. This page is general information, not legal advice.
