Yes, a well-installed metal roof stands up to Falcon’s wind, and that is the main reason Falcon homeowners choose it. Falcon sits on open, rolling plains northeast of Colorado Springs, and the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) designs homes here for a 130 mph wind with exposure category C, the open-terrain setting. Metal panels with concealed clips, or interlocking stone-coated steel, resist uplift when they are fastened to the manufacturer’s tested pattern. The catch is that the edges, ridge and trim are where wind gets in, so the installation matters more than the brand.
Falcon’s wind and hail, on the record
- Wind. On March 29, 2019 the National Weather Service surveyed an EF0 tornado in northern Falcon, with estimated peak winds of 85 mph. Damage was mostly flipped RVs and campers and the wall of one home.
- Hail. In the August 6, 2018 storm, NWS storm reports include 1.5-inch hail 2 miles east of Falcon and 1.25-inch hail 1 mile east-northeast of Falcon, part of a supercell that dropped hail up to 4 inches near Security.
That combination shapes our recommendations: steel over aluminum or copper for dent resistance, concealed fasteners where the budget allows, and close attention to eave and rake trim.
Picking a metal roof for a Falcon home
| Profile | Wind | Hail | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standing seam steel | Clips allow movement and resist uplift | Steel resists dents; ask about Class 4 rated panels | Most newer Falcon homes |
| Stone-coated steel | Interlocking panels | Textured coating hides minor marks | Owners who want a shingle or shake look |
| Exposed-fastener ribbed panel | Depends on screw spacing and upkeep | Thinner panels dent more easily | Shops, barns and outbuildings |
Snow matters too. Below 7,000 feet, PPRBD designs flat roofs for a 30 psf snow load. Metal sheds that snow in sheets, so we place snow guards over doors, walkways and driveways.
What PPRBD checks on a Falcon metal reroof
Falcon is unincorporated El Paso County, so PPRBD issues the permit. Their reroof guidelines require a permit over 100 square feet, drip edge at eaves and rakes, and plank decking with gaps of 1/4 inch or less (or new decking over it). Direct-to-deck metal shingles skip the mid-roof inspection. If you have solar, a separate Detach and Reset permit is required before the array comes off. For applications from July 1, 2026, properties on the state wildfire map also fall under El Paso County’s Appendix E. Our El Paso County guide covers that.
Cost drivers
Metal costs more than asphalt up front. The profile, panel gauge, roof shape and trim count drive the price more than square footage alone. Our metal roofing cost guide explains the ranges, and financing is available if you want to spread the cost.
