Exterior Problems Guide: Siding, Gutters, Paint, Stucco and Windows

The walls of a house fail in a few predictable places. Each guide shows what to look for from the ground, what causes it and what a proper repair looks like.

Veteran-owned Family-run since 1990 650+ Google reviews

The most common exterior problems on houses, apart from the roof, are hail damage to siding, water getting behind siding at flashings, fiber cement installed too close to roofs, decks and soil, rotted trim, gutters that ice up or pull away, paint that peels, chalks or grows mildew, stucco cracking, and leaks at windows and deck ledgers. Each guide below covers the signs, the causes, what you can check safely from the ground, the correct fix and the common wrong ones, the code or manufacturer basis, and when to call. This is general information; your contractor and building department make the call on your home.

Problems that start at the roof

Many wall problems begin where the roof meets the wall. These are covered in our roof problems guide:

A word on safety

Every check in these guides can be done from the ground or from inside. Stay off ladders on ice, do not chip ice from gutters, do not sand or scrape paint on a pre-1978 home until it has been tested for lead, and never mix bleach with ammonia. When a check finds soft wood, a sagging gutter or a growing crack, take photos and call.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common exterior problems on houses?

Water getting behind siding at flashings (kickouts, windows, decks and trim), hail damage to siding and gutters, gutters that overflow, ice up or pull away, paint that peels, chalks or grows mildew, and stucco cracking. Most of them trace back to water, and most can be spotted from the ground.

How do I tell whether wall damage starts at the roof or at the wall?

Look straight up from the damage. A stripe of rot below the bottom of a roof edge that meets a wall points to a missing kickout; damage under a window points to the window flashing; damage behind a deck points to the ledger. Damage spread evenly across a wall, with no detail above it, points to the weather barrier itself.

Which exterior problems can I check safely myself?

Nearly all of them, from the ground: look for stains, swelling and peeling below roof lines, windows and decks; sight down gutters for sags; rub the sunny wall for chalk; do a bleach test on dark spots; photograph cracks with a scale. Leave ladders, roofs and opening walls to a contractor.

Does Integrity fix every problem in this guide?

We install siding and gutters, paint exteriors and do roofing. We do not build or repair decks, and we are not a stucco or window installation contractor. For those, the guides explain what to ask for, and we can still document the problem and fix the roof, gutter and siding work around it.
