Key numbers
77 verified hail storms with stones of 1.75 inches or larger reached Travis County, which includes Austin, from 1984 to 2025 in the storm records we keep; the largest measured 5 inches (softball size) on May 20, 2011 (NOAA NCEI).

A storm counts when NOAA lists a report in Travis County. Each hail size is the storm's largest report in the seven Austin-area counties, which may have fallen in a neighboring county, and insured losses cover every area the storm hit.
New gutters on a typical Austin home cost about $1,000 to $2,500 installed, based on the range we have quoted for Austin homeowners. A one-story house with simple runs and seamless aluminum sits near the low end. Two stories, oversized 6-inch gutters, extra downspouts, guards, or rotten fascia that has to be replaced first push the price up, and copper costs far more. This is a planning range, not a quote. A measured estimate gives you the actual number.
What you are paying for, line by line
| Line item | What changes the price |
|---|---|
| Linear footage | Gutters are priced by the foot. Long ranch homes have more footage than compact two-story homes. |
| Size | 6-inch gutters cost more than 5-inch but carry far more water, which matters for big or steep roofs. |
| Downspouts | Each added downspout, and oversized 3 by 4 inch downspouts, add cost but are often the real fix for overflow. |
| Material | Seamless aluminum is the value choice. Galvanized steel and copper cost more. |
| Height and access | Second-story runs and homes on slopes need more ladder and safety work. |
| Tear-off | Removing and hauling away old gutters is usually a separate line. |
| Fascia repair | Soft fascia boards behind old gutters must be replaced before new gutters can be hung. |
| Guards | Mesh or covers add cost per foot but cut cleaning under live oaks. |
| Drainage | Extensions, splash blocks or underground drains carry water away from the foundation. |
Austin factors that affect gutter cost
- Downpours and foundations. Water that overshoots a small gutter lands at the foundation and in the beds. Sizing up where a valley or a long back slope drains adds cost at install and saves on foundation and landscape repairs later.
- Trees. Live oaks drop leaves, tassels and pollen year-round. If you are under big trees, guards may pay for themselves in cleaning bills.
- Sales tax. The Texas Comptroller says labor to repair or remodel a home is not taxable, but materials are. On a lump-sum bid the installer has already paid the tax on materials; on a separated contract you will see tax on the materials line.
- HOA rules. Many Austin-area HOAs control gutter color and profile, so get approval before the gutters are formed.
- Hail. Hail dents gutters and downspouts. If a storm hit, check whether your gutters belong on a roof claim before paying for them yourself.
Ways to save without cutting corners
- Replace gutters with the roof. One setup, and the drip edge and gutters are fitted together. See Austin roof replacement costs.
- Fix the downspouts first. If gutters overflow, an extra downspout may solve it for less than new gutters.
- Keep sound runs. If only one side is failing, a partial replacement in a matching profile can make sense.
- Skip copper unless you want the look. Aluminum does the same job.
