Key numbers
77 verified hail storms with stones of 1.75 inches or larger reached Travis County, which includes Austin, from 1984 to 2025 in the storm records we keep; the largest measured 5 inches (softball size) on May 20, 2011 (NOAA NCEI).

A storm counts when NOAA lists a report in Travis County. Each hail size is the storm's largest report in the seven Austin-area counties, which may have fallen in a neighboring county, and insured losses cover every area the storm hit.
A roof replacement on a typical Austin home costs about $3,300 to $20,000 for a standard asphalt shingle roof, based on the range we have published for Austin homeowners. Size is the biggest factor, then the shingle line you pick, the roof’s pitch and complexity, and how much rotten decking turns up when the old roof comes off. Metal, tile and slate roofs cost more and have their own guides, linked below. Treat these numbers as a planning range, not a quote; a measured inspection gives you the real figure.
What moves an Austin replacement up or down
| Cost driver | Why it matters here |
|---|---|
| Roof size and pitch | Material and labor scale with squares (100 square feet each), and steep roofs need more safety setup and time. |
| Shingle line | Standard architectural shingles cost less than impact-rated (Class 4) or designer lines. |
| Layers and decking | Each extra layer adds tear-off and dump fees. Soft or delaminated plywood has to be replaced before the new roof goes on. |
| Ventilation | Austin attics run hot. Adding ridge or soffit ventilation costs a little now and helps the new shingles last. |
| Penetrations | Skylights, chimneys, solar mounts and satellite dishes all need new flashing work. |
| Access | Tight lots, steep driveways and pools near the eaves add labor. |
What the City of Austin and Texas law add
- Permits. Inside City of Austin limits, replacing asphalt shingles with asphalt shingles, or replacing a covering that does not adversely affect the roof structure, is exempt from a building permit. Replacing more than 128 square feet of roof decking is not exempt, so a roof with widespread soft decking needs a permit, and that cost belongs in the bid.
- Wildland-Urban Interface. If your home is in the city’s WUI and 50 percent or more of the roof is being replaced, the exemption does not apply, the whole roof must be replaced, and it needs a Class A roof assembly. The city’s WUI map shows which zone you are in.
- Sales tax. The Texas Comptroller says labor to repair, remodel or restore residential property is not taxable. Materials are, either built into a lump-sum price or charged on a separated contract.
- Your deductible. Texas makes it illegal for a contractor to waive, rebate or absorb an insurance deductible, and contracts of $1,000 or more involving an insurance settlement must include a deductible notice.
When to replace instead of repair
Replace when leaks keep coming back in different places, shingles are curling or bare of granules across whole slopes, or hail and wind damage covers too much of the roof to patch. A single blown-off section or a flashing leak is usually a repair; our roof repair team in Austin can tell you which you have. Read more on repair cost versus replacement cost.
