This Morrison project is a homeowner-funded roof replacement: about 20 squares of charcoal architectural asphalt shingles on a 4/12 pitch, photographed in October 2025, with the contract recorded in November 2025. It is a clean example of a straightforward foothill re-roof where the first question was not color but jurisdiction.
The problem
The owner chose to replace the roof and pay for it directly, without an insurance claim. That gave them full control of material and color, and they picked a dark charcoal to black architectural shingle. What needed sorting before anything else was which building office owned the permit, because a Morrison mailing address does not settle it.
Scope
- Roof: full replacement in architectural asphalt shingles, about 20 squares.
- Color: charcoal to black, shown in both photos.
- Pitch: 4/12, a standard walkable slope.
- Ventilation: ridge detail finished with cap shingles (first photo).
The process
- Jurisdiction check. Homes inside the Town of Morrison are permitted through the Town’s building department, which uses a contracted firm for permits and inspections. Homes outside town limits generally fall to Jefferson County.
- Wildfire mapping. If the address sits in a mapped wildland-urban interface area, the roof covering must be Class A under the state wildfire code. We confirm the product listing before ordering.
- Permit and scheduling. Jefferson County requires the permit card posted where it can be seen from the street and two in-person inspections: one mid-roof, one final. The Town asks for inspection requests by 4:00 PM the business day before.
- Tear-off and dry-in. The old roof came off, the deck was checked, and underlayment and drip edge went down.
- Shingles and ridge. Field shingles, then the ridge and cap (photos).
- Final inspection and cleanup of the yard and driveway.

What this project shows about Morrison roofs
- Start with the map, not the brochure. Town or county changes who inspects, how you book inspections, and whether county wildfire rules apply.
- Jefferson County inspects in person. It does not accept photo inspections for re-roofs, so the mid-roof visit has to be scheduled while the deck is still visible.
- Dark shingles are a fair choice here, as long as the attic ventilation is sized right.
More on local rules is in our Morrison roofing guide. For shingle options, see asphalt shingle roofing in the Denver area; if wind or hail is the reason you are looking, start with Denver storm damage repair. See every recent project for other roof types.
