This northeast Austin project is a homeowner-funded roof replacement with Owens Corning Oakridge architectural shingles: about 35 squares in a warm brown-tan blend on a one-story home at a 6/12 pitch. The contract was signed and the work photographed in November 2025. It is a straightforward shingle-for-shingle replacement.
The problem
The homeowner decided to replace the roof and paid for it directly, with no insurance involvement. That kept the decision simple: pick a reliable architectural shingle, and pick a color that suits the house. Central Texas roofs take a beating from summer heat and spring hail, and a one-story house shows its whole roof to the street.
Scope
- Roof: tear-off and new Owens Corning Oakridge architectural shingles, about 35 squares (first photo shows the bundles staged).
- Color: a brown-tan blend that reads warm in full sun (second and third photos).
- Pitch: 6/12, a standard walkable slope.
- Ventilation: box vents near the ridge (second photo).
The process
- Permit check. In the City of Austin, a shingle-for-shingle replacement is generally exempt from a building permit. The exception is the Wildland-Urban Interface: if the home is in the WUI and 50 percent or more of the roof is replaced, the exemption does not apply. Suburbs set their own rules.
- Delivery. Bundles and ridge cap loaded onto the roof (first photo) so the crew can dry in the same day as tear-off.
- Tear-off and deck check. Old shingles off, decking inspected, soft spots replaced.
- Underlayment, drip edge and flashings.
- Shingles, hips and ridge. Field shingles, then hip and ridge caps (third photo).
- Cleanup and walkthrough.
Timeline
Contract and job photos both in November 2025. A one-story shingle roof of this size is a short job once materials arrive; weather is the main variable.
What this project shows about Austin roofs
- Check the WUI map first. Most shingle-for-shingle jobs inside city limits need no permit, but the Wildland-Urban Interface changes that.
- Suburbs differ. Some Austin-area cities require a permit for every re-roof, so the city on your tax bill matters more than the Austin mailing address.
- Color is a comfort decision too. In Texas sun, a mid-tone blend is a common balance between curb appeal and attic heat.
