The three stages American Family describes
American Family’s claims page keeps the process to three stages:
- File. Online in My Account, in the MyAmFam app, through your agent, by phone, or by text for wind and hail.
- Assess. Once the claim is filed, American Family begins assessing it. An adjuster might be sent to appraise the damage and estimate repairs.
- Settle. The final step is settlement, when the insurer pays the amount owed minus your deductible.
If the damage is severe and you need immediate help, American Family says to call its claims line rather than use the online tools.
What to have ready
American Family publishes a short list of what helps before you file:
- Your name, address and phone number
- Your insurance policy number
- The date and time of the loss
- A description of what happened
- Insurance and contact information for anyone else involved
For a Colorado hail claim, add the storm date you think caused the damage and photos from the ground. Hail dates matter because many policies set a deadline from the date of loss, and because a roof can take more than one storm in a season.
Roofs and hail at American Family
American Family’s wind and hail guidance makes two points worth knowing before an adjuster visits. First, hail damage is not always visible: it says a couple of minutes of golf ball sized hail (1.75 inches on the National Weather Service size scale) can bruise a roof, and shingles may be compromised without obvious signs. Second, how a damaged roof is paid depends on the policy. A homeowners policy covers storm damage to a roof at actual cash value, which reflects the roof’s age, condition and materials, while roof replacement cost coverage pays what it costs to replace the roof. The declarations page tells you which one you have.
The same guidance covers the waiting period, and says that if a field adjuster is assigned, the adjuster contacts you within 48 hours to schedule the inspection. Protect the home with plywood or tarps over broken windows and roof openings, photograph or video the damage, keep receipts for those materials, and do not start large structural repairs before you have talked to your adjuster. It notes that a contractor does not have authority to decide coverage or approve payments; that belongs to the insurer.
Where an inspection fits
Because bruised shingles are hard to see, a close inspection before or alongside the adjuster’s visit is useful. We check every slope, the soft metals and the collateral items such as gutters and window screens, and we photograph each hit with a scale reference. You then have documentation to share with your adjuster, and a full scope so nothing gets missed in the scope. Only American Family decides what your policy covers.
State rules that apply to a American Family Insurance claim
Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.
