Liberty Mutual’s home claim steps

Liberty Mutual lays out its home claim process on its claims center pages:

  1. File. Online or by phone. Filing online needs your login, the approximate date and what happened, and other details can be added later.
  2. Callback. A claims representative reviews the incident and gets back to you within 1 to 2 business days.
  3. Documentation. Expect to be asked when and how the damage happened, for a list of damaged property with make, model, age and condition, for photos, and for documents such as estimates, expert reports and receipts for repairs already done. Uploads go through your online account.
  4. Damage review. In some cases only photos are needed. Liberty Mutual may also review the damage by phone or video chat, or in person when a closer look is needed.
  5. Estimate. After the review, Liberty Mutual writes a repair estimate for covered damage and your adjuster walks you through it.
  6. Payment. The first check pays actual cash value, minus your deductible.
  7. Depreciation. With replacement cost coverage, you can receive more after repairs are finished.

Liberty Mutual also notes you can track the claim online, schedule repairs and contact your claims rep from the account, and sign up for text and email updates.

How the first check is calculated

Liberty Mutual explains its payment terms in plain language. Replacement cost is what it would cost to repair or replace the item today. Depreciation is the reduction in value over time due to age, use and condition. Actual cash value is replacement cost minus depreciation, and that is what the first check pays, less your deductible. You pay the deductible out of pocket, usually directly to your contractor.

To request recoverable depreciation, finish the repairs, then upload proof of purchase or repair, such as receipts or invoices, to your online account. Liberty Mutual reviews them and sends a check for the applicable recoverable depreciation, based on its estimate of repair and replacement costs.

Mortgage and subrogation notes

If you have a mortgage, Liberty Mutual says to notify your lender as soon as possible after damage. Both your name and the lender’s will likely be on the check, the lender must endorse it, and you will need to ask the lender how it releases funds for repairs.

If a third party was legally at fault, Liberty Mutual may pursue them through subrogation and could reimburse all or part of your deductible. That is uncommon on hail claims, which rarely have an at-fault party.

If repairs find more damage

Liberty Mutual’s guidance is to contact your claims representative right away and hold off on new repairs until you have spoken with them. On a roof, the usual examples are damaged decking found at tear-off, or flashing and vents that turn out to be damaged once shingles come off. Photos taken during tear-off, added to the original scope, keep that conversation short and make sure nothing gets missed in the scope.

State rules that apply to a Liberty Mutual claim

Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.

Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon will Liberty Mutual contact me after I file?

Liberty Mutual says a claims representative reviews the incident details and gets back to you within 1 to 2 business days. It may contact other parties involved and, in some cases, ask for a recorded statement.

I have Safeco. Is the claim process the same?

Safeco is part of Liberty Mutual, and Safeco's home claims page now redirects to Liberty Mutual's home claims page. Use the claims number on your Safeco declarations page or ask your independent agent which line to call.

Why is my first Liberty Mutual check smaller than the estimate?

Liberty Mutual's first check pays actual cash value: replacement cost minus depreciation, minus your deductible. If your policy has replacement cost coverage, you can request the recoverable depreciation after repairs by uploading invoices or receipts.

Does Liberty Mutual always send an adjuster to the house?

No. Liberty Mutual says that in some cases only photos are needed, and that it may review the damage over the phone or by video chat. In other cases it schedules an in-person appointment.
