To file a Travelers home insurance claim, you can report it online at travelers.com or call 1.800.CLAIM33 (1-800-252-4633), any time of day. Travelers says that in most cases you will hear from your Claim professional within two business days, often sooner, and that it then inspects the damage virtually or in person before writing an estimate for repairs.

Travelers’ property claim steps

Travelers publishes a “what to expect after filing your property claim” page. In order:

  1. Your Claim professional contacts you. They go over your policy information and next steps, often within two business days. They may suggest registering for MyTravelers, where you can send secure messages, see claim status and payment details, and share documents. If your Claim professional changes, Travelers tells you.
  2. Damage evaluation and estimate. Travelers uses several inspection methods depending on the loss, including virtual options. If an on-site inspection is needed, it schedules a time that suits you.
  3. Payment. If the loss is covered, Travelers issues payment at or shortly after inspection, depending on the loss and who must be paid, with your deductible subtracted. Options generally include checks and ePay.
  4. Repairs. Travelers says to hire a licensed and bonded contractor and to give that contractor a copy of the Travelers estimate. If you need help finding one, it may offer its MyTravelers Repair Network.

If the payment includes your mortgage company, Travelers asks you to contact the lender as soon as possible about its release requirements. ePay is not available when a mortgage company or lienholder has to be on the payment.

How Travelers inspects a roof

Travelers’ claim capabilities page says it uses predictive models to pick the inspection method, from capturing exterior measurements with a smartphone to virtual or on-site inspections using drones. It publishes instructions for an exterior inspection application that a homeowner uses for some property inspections.

For a homeowner, that means the first look at your roof may come from your own phone. Clear photos of each slope, close-ups of damage, and the soft metals on the roof help a remote review match what is really there. If you are unsure whether a roof can be reviewed that way, ask your Claim professional whether an on-site inspection is planned.

Services Travelers lists before inspection

Travelers says that when you file a property claim it can offer dispatch services for water and fire mitigation, tree removal and temporary repairs, and help finding short-term housing. Its home claim article adds that if a covered loss forces you out of the home, the policy may pay additional living expenses such as hotels, so keep the receipts. For storm damage, the same article says to limit further harm, such as a tarp over a roof hole, and to keep those receipts too.

When repairs cost more

Travelers asks you to tell your Claim professional as soon as you learn a repair may cost more than its estimate, so it can work through changes with you and minimize interruptions. The cleanest way to do that on a roof is a line-item comparison: our scope next to the Travelers estimate, item by item, with photos for anything that is missing. That keeps the discussion on facts and makes sure nothing gets missed in the scope. Travelers alone decides coverage.

State rules that apply to a Travelers claim

Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.

Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Travelers claim payment by direct deposit?

Travelers offers checks and ePay. Its property claim page notes that ePay is not available when your mortgage company or lienholder must be added to the payment, which is common on a roof claim.

Does Travelers inspect roofs with drones?

Travelers says it chooses the inspection method per claim, from exterior measurements captured with a smartphone to virtual or on-site inspections using drones. It also publishes instructions for its exterior inspection application.

What if my roofer's price is higher than the Travelers estimate?

Travelers asks you to contact your Claim professional as soon as you learn a repair may cost more than its estimate, so it can discuss changes and limit interruptions to the repair. Give your contractor a copy of the Travelers estimate to compare.

Do I have to use the MyTravelers Repair Network?

No. Travelers says the network is available if it determines you are eligible after the inspection, and that its contractors are licensed and insured with a workmanship warranty of up to five years. You can hire your own licensed and bonded contractor.
