To file a State Farm home insurance claim, you can call 800-SF-CLAIM (800-732-5246), which is answered 24 hours a day, use the State Farm app, file online at statefarm.com, or go through your State Farm agent. State Farm's own advice is to file as soon as possible after you find damage, and to photograph the damage and limit further harm first if it is safe.
General information, not legal advice. Integrity Roofing and Painting is a roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with State Farm and do not file, negotiate or settle claims. Your policy and State Farm decide coverage.

What State Farm says happens after you file
State Farm describes three stages on its home and property claims page:
- Assignment. A claim handler or claim team is assigned to your claim and contacts you about the damage.
- Investigation. The handler decides whether the loss is covered and estimates the cost of the covered damage. This is the point where State Farm says you may be eligible for its Select Service program.
- Settlement. If you are entitled to a payment, State Farm pays you or a service provider. Its page says payments above your deductible are issued as quickly as possible.
Once the claim is open, you can track it from State Farm’s claims page and log in to message your claim handler, online or in the app. State Farm also publishes a home inventory checklist and a personal property inventory list, which help if a storm also damaged things inside.
Roof and hail claims at State Farm
State Farm keeps a separate page for roof claims, and it is more detailed than most carriers publish. The short version:
- Telling hail from age. A claim handler can help you sort normal wear and aging from storm damage. State Farm lists random damage and impact marks as common signs of hail, and splits with sharp edges on wood roofs. It links brochures on evaluating composition and wood roofing.
- Choosing a contractor. You choose who estimates and who repairs. State Farm suggests an established roofer who is licensed or bonded where that is required, with references and current liability and workers’ compensation certificates, checked again when the work is scheduled. Its Contractor Locator lists network providers, and it says it does not guarantee any contractor’s performance.
- Low bids. The page says to question bids that are much lower than others for the same work in your area, and to check the Better Business Bureau.
The most useful part for a homeowner is State Farm’s list of what a repair estimate should include: quantities of all materials, including vents, flashing and other wind or hail damaged items; labor charges and work specifications; approximate start and completion dates; payment terms; whether required building permits have been obtained; and the warranty, including conditions that could void it.
That list matches how a complete roof scope is built. Vents, flashing, drip edge, pipe boots and ridge cap are the items most often left off a first estimate, and the permit line matters wherever a reroof needs a permit. Our roof permit guide for Austin and Colorado Springs roofing code guide cover local rules.
Before you call State Farm
State Farm asks you to document the damage with photos and notes, as long as it is safe, and to take steps to reduce further damage. Have ready the date, time and location of the storm, details of what happened, the property involved and your contact information. If the roof is leaking, a tarp and the receipt for it come first. Leave walking a steep or wet roof to a roofer or the claim handler.
Reading the State Farm estimate
When the estimate arrives, compare it line by line with your roofer’s scope. If an item is missing, such as a damaged vent or a gutter section, send photos to your claim handler through the messaging tool and ask for a review. Everything State Farm decides runs through your policy, so read the loss settlement and roof sections of your declarations page before the inspection.
State rules that apply to a State Farm claim
Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.
Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.
