To file an Auto-Owners home claim, you can call your local independent Auto-Owners agent, which is the company's stated first step. If you cannot reach your agent after hours, Auto-Owners runs an after-hours claim reporting line for emergencies at 1-888-252-4626, weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays.

The property claim steps Auto-Owners lists
Auto-Owners’ property claims page sets out what to do, in order, when there is no emergency:
- Protect the property from further damage. On a roof, that usually means a tarp over any opening.
- Note injuries and witnesses. If anyone was hurt, get names and addresses of those involved and of witnesses.
- Contact your agent as soon as possible to report the claim.
- Theft needs a police report. If the claim involves theft from your home, Auto-Owners says your policy requires you to call the police and file a report.
- Use the after-hours line for emergencies when your agent is unavailable.
- Photograph or video the damage.
If there is an emergency, Auto-Owners says to call emergency services first. It also publishes a personal property claim recovery guide as a PDF for losses that include belongings.
Why the agent is the front door
Auto-Owners says it wants claim branches as close as possible to policyholders and their independent agents, and lists more than 100 claim offices in 26 states. In practice, your agent opens the claim, and the claim office near you handles it. Keep your agent’s direct number with your policy papers, along with the after-hours line, so you are not searching for either after a storm.
Catastrophe response
For large events, Auto-Owners describes seven catastrophe teams located around the country. It says a mapping system that monitors the weather helps it identify policyholders likely to have a loss before it happens, so it can launch adjusters toward an area early. For a Colorado hail event that hits many homes in one afternoon, that is the team you are likely to see. Timing matters here too: a Colorado Climate Center study of 1986 to 1993 storms found about 90% of severe hailstorms fell between 1 and 9 p.m. (see our Colorado hail season guide), so many storm claims start in the evening, when the after-hours line is the one answering.
Tracking and payment
Once a claim is open, Auto-Owners says you can follow claim activity and get status updates by signing up for online access on its website or mobile app. For payment, it lists direct deposit into checking or savings, Venmo, PayPal, and an Auto-Owners Claim Card that works wherever Visa debit cards are accepted. It says electronic options can deliver payment in minutes. If a mortgage company is on the policy, expect it to be included on roof payments, and ask your agent how that affects electronic options.
Before the adjuster visits
Auto-Owners’ list ends with photos and video, and that is the piece we can help with. A roof inspection with photos of every slope, the soft metals and any interior stains gives your agent and adjuster a clear record, and our written scope lists each component so nothing gets missed in the scope. The coverage decision stays with Auto-Owners.
State rules that apply to a Auto-Owners Insurance claim
Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.
