What happens after you report to Chubb
Chubb’s personal claims pages describe the sequence this way:
- Report early. Chubb says the earlier you report, the earlier it can help, and that you can report 24 hours a day by phone, online or through your agent.
- A dedicated representative. You are assigned a Claim Representative who tries to reach you within six hours and serves as your main contact. Your agent also has online access to the claim and gets automated updates.
- Inspection. Chubb’s FAQ describes a digital inspection experience shortly after you report, often without an adjuster on site. When one is needed, a local adjuster schedules a visit.
- Estimate. You may be asked to get a repair estimate from a local contractor. Chubb can also arrange one from a preferred contractor, and you can use any contractor you choose.
- Payment. Timing depends on documentation, whether an inspection is needed and any coverage questions. Once a settlement is agreed, Chubb aims to issue payment within 48 hours.
Protecting the home after a loss
Chubb asks you to protect the property from further damage once you are safe, and says it reimburses reasonable expenses you incur doing so after a covered loss. On a roof, that is usually an emergency tarp. Keep the invoice and photos of the opening before it was covered.
Chubb also says to talk to your examiner before discarding damaged items. Once it has inspected them or has documentation that they cannot be repaired, they can usually be thrown out, though in some cases Chubb may want them for salvage. Damaged shingles, flashing or vents set aside during a tarp job are worth keeping until the adjuster has seen them.
Living expenses and response network
If a loss makes the home uninhabitable, Chubb says it may advance payment for temporary living expenses, clothing and immediate needs, and that its Trusted Service Network can arrange short-term housing quickly. For covered water or fire damage, that network has published response targets and a 3-year guarantee on its repair work.
Mortgage and payment notes
On larger claims involving building damage, Chubb includes your mortgagee as a payee because the lender has a financial interest in the property. Personal property payments come to you separately. Chubb suggests contacting your lender before payment is issued to learn its endorsement requirements. If another party caused the damage, Chubb’s recovery department may pursue it and refund some or all of your deductible.
A complete scope for a high-value roof
On a roof of slate, tile, cedar or designer shingles, a single missed item, such as copper flashing or matching ridge, can change an estimate a lot. When we inspect, we photograph the existing materials and list every component, so the contractor estimate Chubb may ask for is complete and nothing gets missed in the scope. Chubb decides coverage under your policy.
State rules that apply to a Chubb claim
Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.
Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.
