To file a USAA homeowners claim, you can use the USAA Mobile App or My Claims Center on usaa.com, which USAA calls the quickest way, or call 800-531-8722. Once you submit, USAA assigns an adjuster to review coverage. For hail, USAA says to expect about three weeks to the first payment, longer after a storm that causes widespread damage.

USAA’s four-step hail process
USAA is one of the few carriers that publishes its hail claim timeline. From its homeowners hail page:
- Report. The quickest way is the app or usaa.com. If USAA needs more information, an adjuster contacts you.
- Inspect. If an inspection is needed, USAA visits the home to look at the damage and start an estimate. It says finishing the report takes about 10 business days.
- Pay. After USAA approves the estimate, it sends a payment, usually within 2 business days. Then you can start repairs.
- Recover the rest. The first payment might not be the only one. You may recover more through a supplement or through recoverable depreciation.
USAA adds that its timeframes are estimates and can take longer when a natural disaster causes widespread damage, which is exactly what a Front Range hail day or a Central Texas spring storm does.
How USAA inspects and pays
USAA’s general homeowners process page says that depending on the claim, you may be able to finish the inspection online, and that photos are often enough to write an estimate. When they are not, the adjuster assigns an inspector, who can often look at outside damage such as a roof without you being home.
The payment math is spelled out in a USAA video on reading the estimate: replacement cost value, minus depreciation, minus your deductible, equals the first payment. USAA subtracts your deductible automatically and you pay that amount to whoever does the repairs. If your policy has a recoverable depreciation clause, the held-back depreciation comes as a second payment after repairs are done and you provide proof. USAA’s own example is a 10-year-old roof: the first payment reflects its depreciated value, and after replacement USAA may reimburse the rest of the cost of a new roof of the same type and quality.
Funds can go to you, the repair company or your mortgage company. If the mortgage company is on the check, USAA says to contact it for endorsement instructions.
Supplements at USAA
USAA’s hail page explains the supplement process in three steps: gather documents, submit them online, and wait for review. You might need one if you find more damage during repairs, if something was missed during inspection, if your contractor’s estimate is higher, or if repairs cost more than expected. USAA wants an itemized contractor estimate and photos of the additional damage, submitted through the app, My Claims Center or your unique claim email address. It says the decision takes about 7 to 10 business days, and an approved supplement becomes another payment or is added to your recoverable depreciation.
Two cautions from USAA itself: message your adjuster before starting any new work, and know that some costs, such as depreciation that does not qualify as recoverable or areas the storm did not damage, may not be covered. Upgrades are yours to pay for.
Where a line-item roof scope helps
Every USAA supplement starts from an itemized estimate. That is the document we produce after an inspection: measured squares, waste, starter, ridge, ice and water barrier where code requires it, flashing, vents and pipe boots, each with a photo. When it matches what the adjuster can see, review is faster and nothing gets missed in the scope. After the work, upload your final invoice in My Claims Center to close out the depreciation.
State rules that apply to a USAA claim
Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.
Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.
