Hippo’s claim process, step by step
Hippo publishes a process map for homeowners claims. It says timelines and coverage vary by policy and state, and treats the steps as a guide rather than a guarantee:
- Make it safe and stop more damage. Shut off water, board up windows, tarp a damaged roof section. Reasonable mitigation costs are typically reimbursable.
- Start the claim and get a claim number. File through the app, online portal or phone. The claim number tracks everything from then on.
- Give the basics. A claims representative gathers the date and time of the loss, the cause, the affected rooms and systems, and your contact details.
- Document. Photograph and video everything before cleanup, list damaged items with serial numbers where relevant, and keep every receipt.
- Inspection. Hippo arranges an inspection. Be available, give access to every affected area, and walk through the damage together if you can. Some smaller claims may use a virtual inspection.
- Coverage decision. Once the adjuster completes the scope of loss, the claims team reviews the policy, endorsements and exclusions.
- Estimate. You receive a written estimate of the covered loss. If your contractor’s estimate differs significantly, you can request a re-inspection or a supplement.
- Payment. Payment comes minus the deductible and any applicable depreciation.
- Repairs and closing. Finish repairs and submit proof of completion and paid invoices if your policy requires them to release withheld depreciation.
ACV, RCV and a five-year-old roof
Hippo explains the two settlement methods with a roof example. Actual cash value is the current depreciated value, so a five-year-old roof is worth less than a new one. Replacement cost value reimburses the cost of replacing the damage with equivalent new materials. Many policies pay ACV first and release the withheld depreciation after you prove repairs are complete. If a policy is ACV only, there is no second payment and the first check is the settlement.
Mortgages add a step. Hippo notes the lender is typically a loss payee, so the check is made out to you and the lender, and the servicer has its own process for endorsing it and releasing funds in draws. Hippo says to contact the servicer early because this step can add weeks.
Hippo’s list of common mistakes
- Waiting to file while you gather estimates. Most policies require reporting within a set window.
- Throwing away damaged materials before the adjuster sees them. Photos alone may not be enough for high-value items.
- Skipping mitigation. A small leak left alone can grow, and part of the result may become your responsibility.
- Signing over claim rights to a contractor without understanding an assignment of benefits. Rules vary by state, and Hippo suggests asking your Department of Insurance.
Supplements and the roof scope
Hippo describes a supplement as a formal request to add damage or costs that were not in the original estimate, documented by your contractor. That is where a complete line-item roof scope earns its keep: decking found at tear-off, code-required underlayment, flashing and vents each get their own line and photo, so nothing gets missed in the scope. Hippo decides what the policy covers.
State rules that apply to a Hippo claim
Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.
Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.
