How to File a Progressive Home Insurance Claim

A Progressive Home policy is often written by another insurer, and that company handles the claim. Here is how to find yours.

To file a Progressive Home insurance claim, you can call the insurance company named in your policy documents, because Progressive says that company handles your claim. If you are not sure which company it is, call Progressive at 1-800-776-4737 with your policy number and it will connect you to the right claims team. You can also report or view a claim by logging in to your Progressive account.

Why the insurer on your policy matters

Progressive explains on its property claims page that coverage details can vary depending on which company you bought your policy from, and that ultimately that company handles your claim. Progressive Home policies are placed through Progressive Advantage Agency, Inc. with insurers affiliated with Progressive and with unaffiliated insurers, and each insurer is solely responsible for the claims on its own policies.

So the first step is to look at your declarations page and find the insurer’s name. If you cannot tell, call 1-800-776-4737 and Progressive will connect you with the right claims team.

The process Progressive describes

Progressive’s general steps for a home, condo or renters claim:

  1. Report. Tell your insurer what happened, online or by phone, as soon as you can, and make emergency repairs if needed to prevent more damage.
  2. Review. Your insurer may ask for photos and receipts, or schedule an adjuster to inspect the home. It then reviews the estimate with you, including repair costs and your deductible.
  3. Payment. The insurer sends a payment for the estimated amount. If some or all of the damage is not covered, it sends a letter of explanation and is available for questions.
  4. Repairs. You are free to use any repairer or contractor you like, or do it yourself, and your claims rep coordinates the process.
  5. More damage. If repairs uncover damage that was not on the estimate, your insurer may send another payment.

Practical tips for a split setup

When the policy was sold under one brand and written by another, keep both names handy: the brand on your account and the insurer on the declarations page. Use the insurer’s claim number on every document, and send your roofer’s scope and photos to that company’s adjuster, not to the sales brand. Whichever company handles it, a full line-item scope makes sure nothing gets missed in the scope.

State rules that apply to a Progressive Home claim

Colorado. The Colorado Division of Insurance regulates home insurers. C.R.S. 10-4-110.8(10) requires your insurer to send a copy of your policy, with the declarations page and endorsements, within three business days of your request, or a certified copy within 30 days. Before issuing or renewing a replacement cost policy, the insurer must offer law and ordinance coverage of at least 20% of the dwelling limit, which pays the added cost of meeting current building codes, subject to your policy. A homeowners policy cannot cut the time to sue below the statute of limitations, and claim handling must follow the unfair practices rules in C.R.S. 10-3-1104(1)(h). DOI Consumer Services: 303-894-7490.

Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says your company has 15 business days (about 3 weeks) to acknowledge a claim and 15 business days after it gets what it needs to decide, with a written reason for any rejection. It can take an extra 45 days if it tells you why. Insurance Code 542.057 then gives it 5 business days to pay. Before suing over hail or wind damage, Insurance Code 542A.003 generally requires written notice at least 61 days ahead. Your policy sets your own reporting deadline. TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439.
